Kentucky Derby 136 Odds: Sidney’s Candy a Potential Bargain at 3/1
The 2010 Kentucky Derby will take place this Saturday at Churchill Downs and one of the mid-range favorites to win the race this year is Sidney’s Candy.
After opening favorite Eskendereya was ruled out of the race over the weekend, Lookin at Lucky emerged as the new fav at 2/1. But Sidney’s Candy is listed right behind Lookin at Lucky with 3/1 odds according to oddsmakers from online sports book Sports Interaction.
These odds present a potential bargain for Sidney’s Candy, who led all the way in winning the Santa Anita Derby on April 3 of this year. Lookin at Lucky (who was a 4-5 favorite to win the race), finished third to the great displeasure of jockey Garrett Gomez, trainer Bob Baffert and his wife.
Sidney’s Candy’s victory at the Santa Anita gave 20-year-old jockey Joe Talamo a Kentucky Derby contender a year after his mount (I Want Revenge) was scratched the morning of the race. Talamo is used to having one of his horses listed as one of the favorites, seeing as how I Want Revenge was a pre-race favorite to win the 2009 Kentucky Derby.
Sidney’s Candy is currently riding a three-race winning streak. Along with the Santa Anita Derby, he also won at the San Felipe-G2 on March 13 and the San Vicente-G2 on February 15. He’s owned by Craig Family Trust and his trainer is John W. Salder. His pedigree is Candy Ride and Fair Exchange by Storm Cat.
