Preakness 135 Odds – Northern Giant a 30-1 Long Shot to Win at Pimlico
After a poor showing at the Arkansas Derby, Northern Giant has been made a long shot to win the 2010 Preakness Stakes this Saturday.
Race History
Northern Giant finished last of nine horses at the G1 Arkansas Derby on April 10, which was his last outing. Among others, he was beaten by fellow Preakness contenders Super Saver and Dublin, giving bettors reason to believe that he won’t fair well this weekend at Pimlico. That said, Northern Giant did finish second at the G2 Lane’s End on March 27 and third at the G2 Risen Star on February 20, so maybe there’s an outside shot he’ll contend this weekend.
Opening Odds
Oddsmakers from online sports book SPORTSBETTING.com have made Northern Giant a 30/1 long shot to win the 135th running of the Preakness Stakes. No contender in Saturday’s race has been given worse odds. (Yawanna Twist is the closest at 25/1.)
Early Analysis
There’s a reason why Northern Giant has the longest odds entering the Preakness. His last time out, he finished dead last in the Arkansas Derby and is coming off a five-week layoff. Not only was that not a good prep, but it’s also been too long since his last outing. He doesn’t have a stakes win, his best Beyer is a 92 and outside of his ability to stalk the pace, there’s not much reason to back him on Saturday. That said, Mine That Bird was a massive long shot to win the Kentucky Derby last year and we all know how that turned out. Of course, Northern Giant won’t be ridden by jockey Calvin Borel, however.
