UFC 106: Ortiz vs. Griffin 2 takes place Saturday from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nev.Saturday’s main card, which will air on Pay Per-View live at 10PM ET features five fights. Here is a look at the featured bouts.
Rematch of a close fight
The main event of Saturday’s card is a light heavyweight contest and a rematch between former UFC champions Tito Ortiz (15-6-1) and Forrest Griffin (16-6). Ortiz is making his return to the octagon after an 18-month absence while Griffin is coming off back-to-back losses, and looking to avenge a split-decision loss to Ortiz at UFC 59 back on April 15, 2006. Ortiz followed that win with a pair of victories over Ken Shamrock, but hasn’t won a fight since Oct. 10, 2006. Griffin followed that loss to Ortiz with wins in four of his next five fights, including winning the light heavyweight title at UFC 86. But, Griffin has been knocked out in his last two fights, losing to Rashad Evans at UFC 92, the getting picked apart and embarrassed by Anderson Silva at UFC 101. Griffin is still the favorite in this fight with a betting line of -145, while Ortiz is at +115. Ortiz was able to win the first meeting with takedowns, but Griffin has improved since the last fight while Ortiz has arguably gotten worse. If Griffin keeps the fight standing, it should be to his advantage.
Explosive welterweights collide
The Co-headliner of Saturday’s card is between welterweights Anthony Johnson (8-2) and Josh Koscheck (13-4). This fight was put together on short notice to help replace the proposed main event of Brock Lesanr against Shane Carwin for the UFC heavyweight title. Lesnar became ill and unable to fight, so the UFC had these two rising welterweights meet. No line has been announced for the fight, but will be released later in the week. Koscheck was once on the verge of becoming the No. 1 contender for the welterweight title, but has now fallen back a bit after splitting his last four fights. His most recent fight was a first round TKO of Frank Trigg. Koscheck is a great wrestler, but uses his wrestling skills to keep the fight standing where he has a lot of power in his punches. Johnson is all about standing and striking. Johnson has won three straight fights, all by knockout, and two of them came in the first round. Johnson is a big welterweight and will have a reach advantage on Koscheck. If there was ever a fight where Koscheck should utilize his wrestling ability to get the fight to the ground, this is it.
