Australian Open Picks
SYDNEY, Australia (TheSpread) – The 2011 Australian Open gets started on early Thursday morning and we have some suggested plays for this golf tournament.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Jason Day. According to oddsmakers, Day has 10/1 odds of winning the tournament. Day is a local Australian and he has had success in his native country. In terms of recent play, he has finished in the top 10 in two of his last three tournaments and he has nine top 10’s on the year, which puts him in the hunt to win most tournaments.
In terms of matchups, I like Adam Scott (-140) vs. Tiger Woods (+110). Scott has been having a strong year and he has finished in the top 11 in five of his last seven tournaments. Playing at his home country as well should make him a top contender for the tournament title. Everyone wants Woods to be the Tiger Woods of old, but he is simply not. Woods hasn’t finished in the top 10 of a tournament since the Masters and is without a win since 2009. He just doesn’t have the same game as the top golfers in the world, including Scott.
Another matchup I like is Nick Watney (-125) vs. Dustin Johnson (-105). Watney hasn’t missed a cut in his last eight tournaments and has two wins this year. He has been one of the top golfers this year and seems to find himself in the top 20 most weeks. Johnson has had just one top 10 in his last seven tournaments and hasn’t been very consistent to end the year. I don’t see him being able to contend in this tournament and I look for Watney to place in the top 10.
