British Open Free Picks
SANDWICH, ENGLAND (TheSpread) – The third major of the year begins early Thursday morning. Here are some free picks to consider for the 2011 British Open.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Luke Donald. According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Bodog, Donald has 15/1 odds to win this year’s event. Donald is the No. 1 player in the world and also a European PGA Tour member, so the British Open course should play well into his game. He has placed in the top 10 in 16 of his last 18 tournaments and he finished 11th in last year’s British Open. Since that time, he has made great strides, and I expect him to be right in contention on Sunday.
In terms of matchups, I like Steve Stricker (-130) vs. Phil Mickelson (+100). Mickelson just does not play well at the Open Championship, as he has one top 10 in 17 appearances. Stricker is more of a straight-ball hitter and more consistent with his ability to finish in the top 20. Stricker is coming off a win and is playing well, so I see him being a contender this weekend.
Another matchup I like is Jason Day (+105) vs. Sergio Garcia (-135). Day has finished second in the last two majors and has been a consistent contender in any tournament he plays in. Despite playing in only four majors in his career, Day has three top 10’s. Garcia has done well overseas and played well in this tournament, but I think Day is a player that is on the verge of becoming a multi-major champion.
