The playoffs begin this week with The Barclays, where the top 125 in the FedEx Cup points will compete. From there, the top 100 remaining after The Barclays advance to the Deutsche Bank Championship. From there, the top 70 move on to the BMW Championship and then the top 30 compete in the Tour Championship. Whichever golfer leads the playoffs following the Tour Championship wins the FedEx Cup.
According to oddsmakers, Luke Donald is the favorite to win the FedEx Cup with 10/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Phil Mickelson, Nick Watney, and Steve Stricker, who each have 12/1 odds. The Field comes in with 3/1 odds.
Donald is No. 1 in the world rankings and he is currently fourth in the FedEx Cup standings, 50 behind Watney for the lead. Donald has one tour win this year and 10 top 10’s. He ended up third in last year’s FedEx Cup. He placed second in two of the four tournaments last year.
Mickelson is sixth in the world rankings and also sixth in the point standings. He is 305 points behind Watney. Mickelson had one tour win and five top 5’s on the year. He placed in the top 10 in one of the four tournaments last year.
Stricker is third in the world rankings and second in the FedEx Cup standings. He is 41 points out of first. Stricker has two wins and five top 5’s on the tour this year. He placed in the top 10 in all but one of the four playoff events last year.
Watney is 10th in the world rankings and leading the FedEx Cup standings. He has two wins and eight top 10’s on tour this year. He had just one top 10 in the playoff events last year.
The 2011 FedEx Cup Playoffs will begin this week with the Barclays and conclude on Sept. 25 when the Tour Championship concludes.
