John Deere Classic Picks
SILVIS, IL (TheSpread) – The 2011 John Deere Classic tees off on Thursday and we have a few selected plays for the golf tournament.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Steve Stricker. According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Bodog, Stricker has 6/1 odds to win the tournament. He is the favorite, but he holds the tournament record for low score and is the two-time defending champion. He may have the shortest odds to win, but that is for a reason. Stricker should certainly be in the hunt come Sunday.
In terms of matchups, I like Jason Day (-140) over Zach Johnson (-110). Day has placed in the top 10 in five of his last six golf tournaments and has quickly made his way up to seventh in the world rankings. Johnson has had a nice year thus far, but he hasn’t been competing for titles like Day. He has been more of a middle-of-the-pack player this year.
Another matchup I like is David Toms (-125) over Charles Howell III (-125). Toms did win this tournament way back in 1997 and he has been on a nice run in 2011. He has placed in the top 25 of the last nine tournaments where he made the cut, and this is a course that he should be able to play into the weekend. Howell has back-to-back third-place finishes, but he hasn’t been a golfer that can sustain that level of play for a long time. His hot streak has given him low odds this week, but I don’t bite. He placed 39th in this tournament last year.
