Masters Picks and Predictions
AUGUSTA, GA (TheSpread) – The 2011 Masters Golf Tournament tees off on Thursday with a stacked field. Here are a few plays to consider for the weekend.
In terms of individuals to look out for, I like Nick Watney to win the year’s first major. According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Sportsbook.com, Watney has 15/1 odds to win the tournament. Watney has steadily improved on his Masters performance in his three showings, starting in 20th in 2008 and working his way to 7th in 2010. Add to that, Watney has placed no worse than 13th in all seven tournaments he has played in in 2011. I think this week is the time that Watney breaks out in the national spotlight.
In terms of matchups, I like Rory McIlroy (+100) vs. Dustin Johnson (-150). McIlroy has finished third in the last two majors and he has placed in the top 10 in three of five golf tournaments this year. Johnson has placed in the top 15 in four of his last five majors, but he has never finished inside the top 30 at the Masters. Johnson has also missed the cut in two of his last four tournaments.
Another matchup I like is Ernie Els (-125) vs. Sergio Garcia (-125). Els has some good history at the Masters as he has six top 10’s in his career at Augusta. Last year, Els placed 18th and he was in the top 20 in three of the four majors of 2010. Garcia has two top 10’s in his career at the Masters, but he has not finished better than 28th since 2004.
