McGladrey Classic Picks
ST. SIMONS ISLAND, GA (TheSpread) – The 2011 McGladrey Classic gets started on Thursday and we have a few suggested plays for this tournament.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Matt Kuchar. According to oddsmakers, Kuchar has 18/1 odds to win the tournament and is among the top favorites to win. Kuchar has finished in the top 25 in his last six tournaments and in 11 of his last 13. He is having a strong finish to his year and a win would cap that off nicely. He also placed 25th in this tournament last year, so he is able to have some success at this course.
In terms of matchups, I like Bo Van Pelt (-115) vs. Charles Howell III (-115). Van Pelt has finished in the top 10 in two of his last three tournaments and he has five top 10’s on the year. Van Pelt had success in this tournament last year, finishing sixth. Howell has had a decent year as well, earning seven top 10’s. However, he has been more hit and miss than Van Pelt, finishing outside the top 20 when not placing in the top 10. Van Pelt has been steadily in the top 25 this year and is more likely to find himself in contention come Sunday.
Another matchup I like is Carl Pettersson (+100) vs. Robert Allenby (-130). Pettersson has made his last six cuts, placing in the top 20 in four of those events and not finishing worse than 37th in that stretch. He is coming off a fifth-place finish and has five top 10’s on the year. Allenby has been in a bit of a rough patch, finishing outside of the top 40 in five of his last eight tournaments. He has just one top 10 in his last 15 tournaments, missing four cuts in the process.
