Phoenix Open Picks
SCOTTSDALE, AZ (TheSpread) – The 2011 Waste Management Phoenix Open begins play on Thursday and I have some plays to consider for the weekend.
In terms of individuals, my pick for this tournament is Hunter Mahan. Oddsmakers from online sportsbook Sportsbook.com have given Mahan 9/1 odds to win this tournament and my pick is with him because he is coming off a sixth-place finish last week and has placed in the top 10 in two of his last three tournaments. Mahan has been strong since the Ryder Cup last fall and he is due to breakthrough with a victory this weekend.
When looking at matchup odds, I like Dustin Johnson (even) over Phil Mickelson (-150) and Anthony Kim (-115) over Rickie Fowler (-135). Now Mickelson is the favorite to win, but he is also a streaky golfer and Johnson has been one of the more consistent golfers in the PGA over the last six months. Johnson has finished in the top 10 in his last two events and finished 22nd or better in his last five, including a win.
For Kim, he is bouncing back well from his injury-plagued 2010 and finished in the top 20 of his last four events, including a sixth-place finish last weekend. Fowler, on the other hand, is still a very young golfer and going to experience some ups and downs and emotional struggles as he seeks his first win. I look for Kim to show a little more poise and best Fowler over the tournament.
