Players Championship Picks
PONTE VEDRA BEACH, FL (TheSpread) – The 2011 Players Championship tees off on Thursday and we have a few selected plays for the golf tournament.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Luke Donald. According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook SBGGLOBAL.com, Donald has 16/1 odds to win the tournament. Despite picking him a few times over recent weeks, I feel like he is the most competitive golfer in the field. Donald has finished in the top 10 in his last six tournament overall and in 11 of his last 12 outings. Donald finished 26th in this tournament last year and he has improved greatly since that time.
In terms of matchups, I like Phil Mickelson (-135) over Tiger Woods (-115). Mickelson won this tournament in 2007 and is coming off two top 10 performances in his last three tournaments while Woods is coming off a knee injury and making his first appearance since the Masters, where he placed fourth. With Woods not 100 percent and Mickelson playing stronger, I like Lefty to beat Tiger this weekend.
Another matchup I like is Sergio Garcia (-140) over Padraig Harrington (-110). Garcia won this tournament in 2008 and he has been a much improved golfer since late 2008. He has failed to miss a cut in his last 11 tournaments. Harrington finished ninth last week in the Wells Fargo Championship, but he had missed three of his last four cuts prior to that. Harrington also missed the cut in last year’s Players Championship.
