U.S. Open Free Picks
BETHESDA, Maryland (TheSpread) – The 2011 U.S. Open tees off on Thursday and we have a few selected plays for the golf tournament.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Steve Stricker. According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Bodog, Stricker has 25/1 odds to win this year’s U.S. Open. Stricker is winless in major championships, but he has been playing well as of late, placing in the top 20 in his last six golf tournaments. He has performed well in past U.S. Opens, placing in the top 10 three different times.
In terms of matchups, I like Luke Donald (-125) over Lee Westwood(-105). Donald has just been unstoppable as of late, placing in the top 10 of his last 10 golf tournaments. While Donald hasn’t had great success at the U.S. Open, he has been as good as anyone this year. Westwood is on a nice run as well, but most of his success has come overseas, while Donald has been playing well on the PGA Tour, which has better competition.
Another matchup I like is Rory McIlroy (+100) over Phil Mickelson (-130). Mickelson has been strong in the U.S. Open in the past, but his play this year has not been very consistent. The course doesn’t really shape up to fit Mickelson’s game, while McIlroy is more of a controlled player that will not take crazy chances. McIlroy has placed in the top 15 of the last three majors and coming off his meltdown in the final round of the 2011 Masters, which should prove to be a good learning lesson for him.
