Valero Texas Open Picks
SAN ANTONIO, TX (TheSpread) – The 2011 Valero Texas Open tees off on Thursday with a field lacking a lot of star power. Here are some plays to consider for this weekend.
In terms of individuals to look out for, my pick is with Geoff Ogilvy. According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook Sportsbook.com, Ogilvy has 14/1 odds to win the tournament. He is coming off a fourth-place finish in the Masters last weekend and has a pair of top 10’s to work with. I like Ogilvy’s came because he ranks 13th in the PGA in terms of putts per round at just 25 per 18 holes. His steady play should put him in contention come Sunday.
In terms of matchups, I like Bo Van Pelt (+105) over Martin Laird (-155). Van Pelt is coming off a top 10 at the Masters and he been consistently competitive this year, racking up three top 20’s. Laird has been playing well as of late too, but seems to be due for a swing backwards. He took a step back last week, placing 20th at the Masters after placing in the top 10 of his previous three events. With the odds so highly in Laird’s favor, I would take a chance on Van Pelt.
Another matchup I like is Ryan Palmer (-135) vs. Charley Hoffman (-115). Palmer has quietly had a nice year following his 10th place finish in the Masters. He now has four top 10’s this year and missed just two cuts, which is a big upgrade from last year. Hoffman has been steady too, but has not been contending for titles. He has finished between 24th-37th in his last five tournaments and doesn’t have a top 10 this year.
