Wells Fargo Championship Picks
CHARLOTTE, NC (TheSpread) – The 2011 Wells Fargo Championship tees off on Thursday with a competitive field looking to pick up a big PGA Tour victory.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Jim Furyk. According to oddsmakers from online sportsbook SBGGLOBAL.com, Furyk has 28/1 odds to win the tournament. Furyk won this event in 2006 and he took seventh in last year’s tournament. This is a course he is comfortable on and performs well at. In terms of recent play, Furyk has finished 25th or better in his last four tournaments and seems to be playing well. I look for him to have a good chance to win on Sunday.
In terms of matchups, I like Anthony Kim (-105) over Sergio Garcia (-145). Garcia has been on a nice run in 2011, as he has finished no worse than 35th in any of his seven tournaments, but Kim has had a lot of success at this course. He won the tournament in 2008 with a tournament record score of -16, and he also finished seventh in last year’s tournament. Kim has struggled this season, but when he starts well, he usually finishes well.
Another matchup I like is Rory McIlroy (-130) over Phil Mickelson (-120). McIlroy is the defending champion of this event and outside of his collapse in the final round of the Masters, he has been playing as well as anyone. He has finished in the top 20 in all but one tournament this year and has four top 10’s. Mickelson has just three top 10’s on the year with one win, but has been outside the top 20 in six tournaments.
