Els wins, Scott collapses
LANCASHIRE, England (TheSpread) – Adam Scott seemed to have the British Open all wrapped up, but a late collapse opened the door for Ernie Els to claim his third major championship.
Scott entered the day with a four shot lead and led by four shots with four holes to play in Sunday’s final round. But, he made bogey on the final four holes while Els hit a huge birdie putt on No. 18 to get himself the one shot victory at -7 overall.
Els finished with a 2-under 68 on Sunday while Scott posted a 5-over 75. According to oddsmakers, Els had 40/1 odds to win the British Open this week, which means a $100 wager on him to win will pay out an additional $4,000. Even entering Sunday’s round, Els had just 25/1 odds to win, while Scott had 4/7.
Tiger Woods and Graeme McDowell were both hopeful to contend on Sunday, but both struggled all day. Woods posted a 3-over 73, which was highlighted by an early triple bogey, while McDowell shot a 5-over 75. Woods finished -3 overall and tied for third while McDowell was tied for fifth at -2 overall.
