The FedEx Cup playoffs span four tournaments (The Barclays, the Deutsche Bank Championship, the BMW Championship, and the Tour Championship) over four successive weeks. The playoffs begin with 125 players and then whittle down to the final 30 for the final event. The player with the most FedEx Cup points at the end of the playoffs wins the title.
According to oddsmakers, Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy are favored to win this playoff, as each has 5/1 odds. Bubba Watson has 12/1 odds to win.
Woods currently leads the FedEx standings by 159 points over Jason Dufner, who will not play in the first event. Woods has won the FedEx Cup twice in his career and he has won the BMW Championship twice since it became part of the playoffs and the Tour Championship once since it closed the tournament.
McIlroy is third in the standings, 177 points back of Woods. McIlroy has never won the FedEx Cup and not won a playoff event in his career.
Watson is fifth in the standings. He sits 492 points out of first. That is little ground to make up over the next four weeks. Bubba has never won this Cup and never won a playoff event.
The 2012 FedEx Cup Playoffs begin this week with The Barclays and will span over the next four tournaments, concluding with Tour Championship the week of Sept. 20.
