2012 Frys.com Open Free Picks
SAN MARTIN, CA (ATS Consultants) – The PGA TOUR is back in California for its Fall Series and the 2012 Frys.com Open, which follows the JT Shriners Open.
This is an opportunity for those players outside the top 125 in the Money List to secure their playing privileges for next year. After this week there are just two more tournaments in 2012 and the cut-off will be determined once those events have taken place.
The host course this week is the CardeValle Golf Club in California. Decent weather conditions are expected which means there should be plenty of birdie and eagle opportunities on this par 71 track. However, the greens are above average in size which means bogey avoidance will be a key skill.
The biggest name in the tournament, Els hasn’t done a lot since winning the British Open. But he hasn’t played poorly. Els played here last year and tied for four with four rounds in the 60s. He made just four bogeys here last year and led the field in greens hit.
The 2003 British Open winner is an excellent putter and he used his skills on the greens to figure in the Player’s Championship against the strongest field of the year to finish as a runner-up. The course will suit Curtis and that makes him a leading contender this week. His driving accuracy and putting should put him in the top 10.
Longshot
Steele is a California native, which can’t hurt. He finished T7 at this stop last year and just missed the FedExCup Playoffs this year at 130th in the standings. He did bounce back with a solid tie for 13th at TPC Summerlin.
