Northern Trust Open Picks
PACIFIC PALISADES, CA (TheSpread) – The 2012 Northern Trust Open gets started on Thursday morning and we have some suggested plays for this event.
My pick to win the event this weekend is Luke Donald. According to oddsmakers, Donald has 15/1 odds to win this tournament. Despite being No. 1 in the world rankings, Donald is not the favorite to win this event. I think that is a mistake. Donald had a string of 13-straight tournaments where he finished in the top 20, but is coming off a 48th-place finish in his last outing. Donald isn’t the golfer to have back-to-back bad showings. I think he will come out very strong this weekend and be in contention to win on Sunday.
In terms of matchups, I like Rickie Fowler (-115) over Bill Haas (-115). Fowler missed the cut at Pebble Beach last week, but he was playing very well as of late, finishing in the top 26 of his previous four outings. Haas hasn’t been bad, but he hasn’t been in real contention aside from the Farmers Insurance Open. Fowler is a year older and a year wiser, and I think 2012 will be a big year for him.
Another matchup I like is Adam Scott (-110) over Sergio Garcia (-120). Garcia has a nice boost in his career to end 2011 and he continues to be strong entering 2012. He has placed in the top 15 in six of his last seven tournaments. Despite all this, I still like Scott, who has been very strong in top-level tournaments over the last year. Scott has finished in the top 11 in five of his last six tournaments and he emerged as one of the candidates to rise to the top of the world rankings in 2012. Both should have strong showings this weekend, but look for Scott to be just a little better.
