Potter Jr. wins in a playoff
WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, WV (TheSpread) –Not many would have expected Ted Potter Jr. to be the winner of the 2012 Greenbrier Classic, but he did just that on Sunday, beating Troy Kelly in a playoff.
Potter Jr. and Kelly both had a solid Sunday to get into a playoff. Potter Jr. shot a 6-under 64 to finish 16-under for the tournament while Kelly shot a 4-under 66 in the final round to get to 16-under.
In the playoff, both golfers made par on the first two holes. Potter Jr. actually missed a 5-foot putt to win on the second playoff hole, but rebounded to birdie the next hole while Kelly made par, giving Potter the championship.
According to oddsmakers, Potter Jr. was part of the field that had 7/2 odds to win. This means that a $100 wager on Potter Jr. will pay out an additional $350.
Both Potter Jr. and Kelly finished two shots ahead of the next closest competitor. Charlie Wi and Charlie Beljan finished at 14-under to tie for third. Wi posted a 5-under 65 on Sunday while Beljan carded a 3-under 67.
This tournament lacked much star power up top, but U.S. Open champ, Webb Simpson, was in contention to win on Sunday. However, he fired a 3-over 73 in the final round to finish -11 overall and in a tie for seventh.
