Johnson wins in playoff
SILVIS, IL (TheSpread) – Zach Johnson managed to make enough shots to outlast Troy Matteson in a playoff and win the John Deere Classic on Sunday.
Matteson entered the final round in the lead by three shots but struggled early on, which opened the door for Johnson to get in the hunt.
Johnson actually held a two-shot lead as he played the final hole, but Matteston made eagle on 17 on an improbably 56-foot putt to tie for the lead, and eventually force the playoff.
On the first playoff hole, Johnson and Matteson both managed to hit a ball in the water on the 18th hole and each finished with a double bogey. The second time around, Johnson hit a beautiful approach shot out of the sand to make birdie while Matteson made par.
According to oddsmakers, Zach Johnson had 12/1 odds to win this event, which means a $100 wager on Johnson to win will pay out an additional $1,200.
Scott Piercy came in third at -18 overall after shooting a 65 on Sunday. Three-time defending champ, Steve Stricker, finished tied for fifth at -16 overall after shooting a 1-under 70 on Sunday.
