HUMBLE, TX (ATS Consultants) – The PGA Tour moves to Texas this week for the Shell Houston Open.
The Redstone Golf Club has been the tournament host since 2003 when Houston-native Fred Couples won the Shell Houston Open. Vijay Singh has won at Redstone twice in consecutive years in 2004 and 2005. After three years at Redstone’s Member Course, the event shifted to Tournament Course in 2006.
One year later, it assumed the role as a primer for the Masters. Last year’s Shell Houston Open winner was Phil Mickelson with a total score of 268 to finish -20 under par. Tiger Woods, a winner last week at Bay Hill for the Arnold Palmer Invitational, is taking a break this week to prepare for The Masters.
Mickelson is the defending champ and in 2010, he rattled off five straight birdies in the final round (he finished T35). He led the field in 2011 with 27 birdies, including 18 after the cut. He tied the course record with a bogey-free 63 in the third round. Mickelson has won once this year, has two top tens and three top 25s. He’s also top ten on the tour in birdie conversions with 36 and putts per round with 27.9.

The 42-year old South African has posted top fives the last two weeks. That’s the first time he’s achieved that on the PGA Tour since back-to-back wins in 2010. He’s currently 29th in greens in regulation and 13th in adjusted scoring. He’s trying to qualify for The Masters, a tournament he’s played in every year since 1994. He might get invited but a win at the Houston Open would definitely put him in .
He’s had three straight top-15 finishes and finished tied for fourth here last year. He hasn’t played since finishing 12th in the WGC-Cadillac. He’s fourth in putting per hole at 1.7 and 13th in putts per round at 28.1. He has 3 career wins and 31 top 10 finishes.
