Updated Ryder Cup Odds
MEDINAH, IL (TheSpread) – The Ryder Cup is complete with its first day and the United States has got out to a strong start.
After eight different matches on the opening day, which were worth 1 point each, the U.S. finds itself with a 5-3 lead on Europe. The United States needs 14.5 points to win the Ryder Cup, while Europe needs just 14 total points to earn a tie and regain the championship
According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, the United States is even more of a favorite to win the Ryder Cup, as it has odds of -250 to win, while Europe now has odds of +250 to win. The odds of a tie are listed at +1000.
All eight matches on Friday saw a winner. The opening four alternate shot matches were split 2-2, while the afternoon best ball matches saw the U.S. win 3-1.
The key team for the Americans was Keegan Bradley and Phil Mickelson. The duo won two matches on the day, beating Luke Donald and Sergio Garcia, 4&3, in alternate shot, and then topping Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell, 2&1, in best ball.
For Europe, the star of the day was Nicolas Colsaerts, who only played in the afternoon best ball, but he single-handedly won a point for his team. He was paired with Lee Westwood, but didn’t get much help. Colsaerts made numerous lengthy putts for birdie and eagle to give Europe a 1-up win over the American team of Tiger Woods and Steve Stricker. That win was the final point of the day.
Play continues on Saturday with the same format as Friday. On Sunday, there will be 12 individual match play competitions. Each match is worth one point. In the event of a tie, each team gets ½ a point.
The 2012 Ryder Cup continues on Saturday, September 29 and will run through Sunday, September 30 from Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois. For complete odds on which team will win the Ryder Cup, see below.
