According to oddsmakers, Mickelson is the favorite to win this matchup, as he has a money line of -125, while Watson has odds of -105 to finish ahead of Mickelson.
In the world rankings, Watson currently sits fifth while Mickelson is 13th. Watson’s ranking is thanks largely to him winning the Masters this past year. He did miss the cut of the last tournament he competed in. Prior to that, he has finished in the top 20 of his last 12 tournaments. Mickelson withdrew from his last tournament, but had been playing steady prior to that. He finished 26th or better in his last six tournaments prior to The Memorial.
Watson has won just the one major. He has played in the U.S. Open five times in his career and finished in the top 10 once, when he took fifth in 2007. He has missed the cut in two of his five appearances. Mickelson has won four majors in his career, but never won the U.S. Open. He has placed second in this tournament five times in his career. In a total of 21 appearances in this event, Mickelson has finished in the top 10 nine times.
