According to oddsmakers, Woods is favored to win this matchup with McIlroy, as he has a money line of -150 to win, while McIlroy has a money line of +120 to best Woods.
Looking at the world rankings, Woods is fourth while McIlroy is second. McIlroy is coming off a seventh-place finish in his last outing, but he had missed his last three cuts prior to that. Woods is coming off a victory in his last tournament, but he has been hit-and-miss. He has won two of his last five outings, but placed 40th or worse in the other three.
When it comes to the U.S. Open, McIlroy is the defending champion of the event, but that was and is his only major championship. Woods comes into this weekend with 14 major championships to his credit, including three U.S. Open titles. Woods has been very solid at this tournament, making the top 6 in five of his last six appearances and finished in the top 6 in 8 of his last 12 U.S. Opens. Woods last won this tournament back in 2008, which was also his last major championship. McIlroy has placed in the top 10 in two of his three U.S. Open appearances, but has failed to crack the top 40 in his last two majors.
