Simpson claims U.S. Open title
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (TheSpread) – It was a wild weekend to wrap up the 2012 U.S. Open, but in the end, Webb Simpson claimed his first major championship.
Starting the day four shots off the lead, Simpson posted his second consecutive 68 on Sunday to finish the tournament at +1 overall. Then, the rest of the field simply fell back and Simpson came out the victor.
Simpson came into the tournament with 50/1 odds to win, which means a wager of $100 on Simpson will pay out an additional $5,000. Even entering the final round, Simpson had just 28/1 odds to win.
Jim Furyk and Graeme McDowell entered the day with the lead at 1-under par for the tournament. McDowell struggled early and seemed out of the running while Furyk was holding steady at even par. McDowell rallied late an had a birdie putt on the 18th hole to try and force a playoff, but missed. Furyk collapsed late and ended up two shots off the lead at the end of the tournament.
