WGC-Bridgestone Invitational Picks
AKRON, OH (ATS Consultants) – The PGA Tour moves to Akron, Ohio for the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational.
The event takes place from Firestone Country Club in Akron. Tiger Woods has won this event seven times, with the last coming in 2009. He’s the heavy favorite to win at 9-2. Other short odds to win are Luke Donald (12/1), Lee Westwood (15/1) and Adam Scott (15/1). This is an important tournament because it takes place right before the final major of the season-the PGA Championship.
The only way you get invited to this event is to have won one of a specified list of tournaments around the world, be a member of the most recently named Ryder or Presidents Cup team, or be ranked in the top 50 in the official world golf rankings. Firestone Country Club in Akron is an exceedingly long course for a par 70, maxing out at nearly 7400 yards. There are seven par 4s measuring over 460 yards and one of the two par 5s, the 16th, at a whopping 667 yards, length is an absolute necessity to score well here.
Scott is coming off a very tough loss at the Open Championship, where he bogeyed the final four holes. But he did win this tournament last year and has hit the ball extremely well. There’s no reason why he can’t do it again at Firestone.
Even though he faded down the stretch at the Open Championship, he has been on a great run over the last couple months with two wins, a runner up and a 4th place finish at the U.S. Open. Nobody is better with a longer iron in his hand. He is -11 when has a 175-200 yard approach shot this year. Firestone causes a lot of those kinds of approaches.
Longshot
Oosthuizen yielded a top 10 two years ago that included a 68-65 finish. He also ranks inside the top ten on Tour on long approaches over 200 yards and is coming off a nice showing at the Open where he posted a top 20.
