Merrick gets first PGA victory
PACIFIC PALISADES, CA (TheSpread) – John Merrick earned his first PGA Tour victory on Sunday, in a playoff, as he topped Charlie Beljan to win the 2013 Northern Trust Open.
Beljan and Merrick each finished the tournament at -11 overall after Beljan shot a 4-under 67 on Sunday and Merrick carded a 2-under 69. The two played two playoff holes before Merrick was able to best Beljan and claim the win by paring the hole while Beljan bogied.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, Merrick had 150/1 odds to win this event, which means a wager of $100 on Merrick to win will pay out an additional $15,000.
Bill Haas entered the final round as the leader, but struggled on Sunday, shooting a 2-over 73 to finish the tournament at -10 overall, in a three-way tie for third place.
