McIlroy wins the British Open
HOYLAKE, England (TheSpread) – Rory McIlroy added a third major championship to his collection on Sunday, winning the 2014 British Open.
McIlroy led after every round of the tournament and had a six-shot lead heading into Sunday. He played consistent enough to avoid any real danger, shooting a 1-under 71 to get to -17 for the tournament, two shots ahead of the field.
McIlroy opened the tournament with a pair of 66s and then had two eagles on the final three holes of his third round to really take hold of the championship.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, McIlroy came into this tournament with 14/1 odds to win the event, which means a wager of $100 on him to prevail will pay out an additional $1,400.
Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler each finished tied for second at -15. Garcia posted a 6-under 66 on Sunday while Fowler posted a 67. Fowler was the lone golfer in the field to shoot under 70 in all four rounds.
