McIlroy is coming off an impressive showing at the 2014 British Open, winning his third major. He followed that up by winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational last week, a field that was very similar to a major. McIlroy is now back to No. 1 in the world rankings. According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, McIlroy has been given 5/1 odds to win this major while he has a money line of -250 to finish in the top 10 and odds of -450 to finish in the top 20. Odds of him making the cut are listed at -1000.
McIlroy is a former PGA Championship winner. He won this event back in 2012 and this is a tournament he has performed very well in. It is his best major in terms of consistent performance. He has played in this event five times and finished in the top 10 four times. He was third in 2009, third in 2010, 64th in 2011, first in 2012 and eighth in 2013.
McIlroy has never missed the cut in this event in his five attempts. McIlroy has played in a total of 24 major championships in his career and has only missed the cut in four of them. His last missed cut came in the 2013 British Open, which he went on to win the next year.
In the 24 majors McIlroy has competed in, he has finished in the top 10 in nine of them, four of which come in the PGA Championship. He has placed in the top 10 in three of his last four majors, including two of the three this year. He has placed in the top 20 in 11 of the 24 majors he has appeared in throughout his career.
