McIlroy takes WGC event
AKRON, Ohio (TheSpread) – Rory McIlroy continued his strong play as of late, winning the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational on Sunday.
Coming off his win in the British Open, McIlroy wins another high-profile event a week before the PGA Championship. McIlroy won the event by shooting an 66 on Sunday to finish at -15 for the tournament, two shots ahead of Sergio Garcia. Garcia started the day in the lead, but carded a 71 to finish at -13 overall. McIlroy is now the No. 1-ranked player in the world.
According to oddsmakers from Bovada.lv, McIlroy came into this tournament with 6/1 odds to win the event, which means a wager of $100 on him to prevail will pay out an additional $600.
Charl Schwartzel made a big climb on the day, shooting a 6-under 64 to get to -9 for the tournament, which put him in a tie for fourth. Tiger Woods was forced to withdraw during his final round after injuring his back on one of the early holes. His status for the PGA Championship is now in question.
