McIlroy is a former winner of this event, as he claimed the 2015 title by beating Gary Woodland in the final. He also was the runner up in 2012 and finished fourth in 2016. McIlroy ended a lengthy winless streak of over a year this past weekend by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational by multiple shots. He has now bumped up to 7th in the world rankings.
Johnson is the defending champion of this event, as he bested Jon Rahm in the final. DJ reached the quarterfinals the year before. Johnson remains the top-ranked golfer in the world. He already owns a win this year and has four top-10 finishes out of 10 events. His worst showing this year was 16th at the Genesis Open.
Thomas has never won this event and is playing in it for the third time. He has not had good performances the first two years. Thomas comes into this week second in the world rankings. He had a five-win 2017 season and has already earned a win this year, in the Honda Classic. He finished second in his last event, the WGC-Mexico Championship.
