Spieth edges Johnson for U.S. Open
UNIVERSITY PLACE, WA (TheSpread) – Jordan Spieth became the first golfer since Tiger Woods to win the first two majors in the same year, as he won the U.S. Open Championship on Sunday by one shot.
The finish was exciting, as Spieth birdied the 18th hole to get to -5 for the tournament. Dustin Johnson put a five iron within 12 feet of the hole for a chance at eagle to beat Spieth by one. Johnson sent his eagle attempt past the hole and then missed a short birdie putt to give Spieth the victory.
According to oddsmakers, Spieth came into this week with 8/1 odds to win the U.S. Open, which means a wager of $100 on him to prevail will pay out an additional $800.
Spieth ended up with a 1-under 69 on Sunday to win the tournament while Johnson finished tied for second with Louis Oosthuizen. Johnson ended up with a 70 on Sunday while Oosthuizen shot a 3-under 67 in the final round. Adam Scott made a big climb on Sunday, as he shot a 6-under 64 to get to -3 for the tournament and end up tied for fourth.
