Gomez wins St. Jude Classic
MEMPHIS, TN (TheSpread) – Fabian Gomez had never won on the PGA Tour coming into the week, but he made it look easy on Sunday, winning the FedEx St. Jude Classic by four shots.
Gomez posted a 4-under 66 on Sunday to finish at -13 for the tournament, which put him four ahead of Greg Owen. Gomez was steady all week, posting a 66 in the first and final rounds while shooting a 68 on Friday and a 67 on Saturday.
According to oddsmakers, Gomez was a massive long shot to win this weekend, as he had 300/1 odds to claim his first PGA victory. This means that a wager of $100 on him to win will pay out an additional $30,000.
This week’s field lacked a lot of star power, but Phil Mickelson fought his way up the leaderboard with a 5-under 65 on Sunday. He finished at -8 for the tournament. Owen, who finished second, had just an even-par 70 on Sunday. Seung-Yul Noh also had a strong Sunday, posting a 65 as well to finish tied with Mickelson for third at -8 for the weekend.
