The Northern Trust Predictions
The Northern Trust is set to tee off Thursday morning to mark the start of the FedEx Cup Playoffs. Here’s some golfers we like to contend for the win this weekend.
According to the latest oddsmakers, Hideki Matsuyama is favored to win this tournament, as he has 10/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Jordan Spieth (12/1), Dustin Johnson (12/1), Rory McIlroy (11/1) and Rickie Fowler (12/1). The Northern Trust takes place Thursday-Sunday at Glen Oaks in Old Westbury, New York.
Rory McIlroy is a formed winner of the FedEx Cup Playoffs and someone that has played well in the playoff events over the years. He has won four playoff events in his career, including two last year. He is winless this year, but still has six top-10 finishes in 2017. He has cracked the top 5 in two of his last three events as well, so he is playing at a level capable of winning this week.
Jason Day has been showing flashes of getting back on track. He comes into this tournament with 18/1 odds and is the 2015 winner of this tournament. Day has won two playoff events in his career. He remains a top-10 golfer despite a lackluster year. Day is winless with just three top-10 finishes in 2017, but he has been improving in recent weeks. He finished 27th at The Open Championship and was then 24th at the Bridgestone Invitational. He followed that up with a 9th-place finish at the PGA Championship. Look for Day to keep climbing up that ladder.
Henrik Stenson has 22/1 odds this weekend, but is also riding a nice hot streak. He is coming off a win last weekend in the Wyndham Championship and has finished in the top 20 in five of his last six tournaments. Stenson has shown the ability to do well in these events before, as he won two of them in 2013 to claim the FedEx Cup. I like Stenson to build off his win last week and carry it into this weekend.
