McIlroy may miss British Open
LAS VEGAS, NV (TheSpread) – The 2015 British Open could be played without its defending champion, as top-ranked golfer Rory McIlroy suffered an injury over the weekend that has him questionable to compete.
McIlroy announced on Monday that he suffered a total rupture of the ATFL – the anterior talofibular ligament – in his left ankle while playing some soccer with friends over the weekend. He is currently in a boot and on crutches.
“Continuing to assess extent of injury and treatment plan day by day,” McIlroy wrote. “Rehab already started. … Working hard to get back as soon as I can.”
Prior to the injury, McIlroy was favored to win the British Open. Now, according to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, McIlroy is listed with 9/1 odds to win, and that is assuming he plays in the tournament. Jordan Spieth is now a 5/1 favorite to win, while Dustin Johnson has 12/1 odds. The British Open takes place on July 16-19 at St. Andrews.
McIlroy is the top-ranked golfer in the world rankings and he has had a strong 2015 thus far, winning three tournaments while finishing runner-up in another. He is the defending British Open champion and he has finished in the top 10 in five of the last six major championships, including two victories.
