McIlroy out of the British Open
LAS VEGAS, NV (TheSpread) – Rory McIlroy will be unable to defend his title in the 2015 British Open, as his ankle injury is too severe for him to compete next week.
McIlroy suffered a total rupture of the ATFL – the anterior talofibular ligament – in his left ankle while playing some soccer with friends over the weekend. He made the injury public on Monday but didn’t rule out an appearance in The Open Championship until Wednesday.
“After much consideration, I have decided not to play in the Open Championship at St. Andrews. I’m taking a long term view of this injury and, although rehab is progressing well, I want to come back to tournament play when I feel 100% healthy and 100% competitive. Thank you for all your support and best wishes. I hope to be back on the course as soon as I can,” McIlroy posted on his Instagram account.
With McIlroy out, Jordan Spieth is now the clear favorite to win his third major in 2015. According to oddsmakers at Bovada.lv, Spieth is now a 9/2 favorite to win, while Dustin Johnson has 12/1 odds and Justin Rose has 16/1 odds.
Spieth is looking to complete the third leg of the grand slam of golf this year, as he has already won the Masters and U.S. Open. He has played in the British Open twice, finishing 44th in 2013 and 36th last year. Spieth is actually playing in the United States this week, which has some scratching their head. Most competitors are already near St. Andrews preparing for next week’s major.
