McIlroy wins Match Play Title
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (TheSpread) – Rory McIlroy maintained his spot atop the world rankings on Sunday as he completed a victory in the WGC-Cadillac Match Play Championship.
McIlroy had an impressive week, going 7-0 in match play action, defeating Gary Woodland in the championship match, 4 & 2. McIlroy has now won two of the last four WGC events with today’s victory. McIlroy had defeated Jim Furyk, 1 Up, the in semifinal match.
According to oddsmakers, McIlroy came into this tournament with 9/1 odds to win, which means a wager of $100 on him to prevail will pay out an additional $900.
While McIlroy was the top seed entering the week, Woodland was 52nd in the world rankings, but he made an improbable run to the finals. He defeated Danny Willett in the semifinals, 3 & 2. Furyk went on to beat Willett in the consolation match, 3 & 2.
