Updated Ryder Cup Odds
The opening day of the 2018 Ryder Cup was a tale of two sessions, but Europe was able to establish the Day 1 lead thanks to a clean sweep in the afternoon.
According to the latest oddsmakers, Europe is now the favorite to win this event, as it has -155 odds to prevail. Team USA is now listed with +185 odds to win, while the odds of a tie happening are at +1000. The Ryder Cup is a 3-day event, featuring 4 foursomes and 4 fourball matches each of the first two days and then 12 singles matches on Sunday. Each match is done in match-play format and is worth 1 point to the winner or ½ on a tie. The 2018 Ryder Cup continues Saturday and Sunday from Le Golf National, Albatros Course in Guyancourt, France.
The United States actually opened up play on Friday on a good note, winning three of the four matches in Four-Ball play. The big victory was Tony Finau and Brooks Koepka defeating Justin Rose and Jon Rahm, 1 Up after trailing the entire match. Dustin Johnson and Rickie Fowler picked up a win while Justin Thomas and Jordan Spieth also were victories. Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood won the final morning match to salvage a shutout and make the score 3-1.
It was the afternoon where Europe completely dominated. The foursomes matches went to the Europeans by a wide margin. Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson won 3&2, Ian Poulter and Rory McIlroy won 4&2, Sergio Garcia and Alexander Noren won 5&4 while Francesco Molinari and Tommy Fleetwood won 5&4.
The United States hasn’t managed a win in European soil since 1993. Despite what looks like a stacked team on paper, they continue to struggle in the pairs format, something that has been a strength for Europe for years.
