Open Championship Fantasy Picks
The 2018 Open Championship is set to tee off early Thursday morning with all the top golfers competing. Here’s our suggested fantasy team for the weekend.
The Open Championships takes place Thursday-Sunday from Carnoustie Golf Links in Carnoustie, Scotland. In DraftKings Classic Golf format, you are given a team salary of $50,000 and six roster spots to fill. Here’s the team we like.
Rory McIlroy, $11,000: McIlroy has been very strong at The Open Championship. He was the 2014 winner while placing in the top 5 in 2016 and 2017 as well. Both of those showings came after missing the cut at the U.S. Open just weeks prior. He missed the cut at this year’s U.S. Open as well and should be ready to bounce back in a big way. After falling back to eighth in the world rankings, McIlroy could use a big splash this weekend.
Sergio Garcia, $9,000: Garcia is a guy that can crash and burn, but I think it will be a good weekend for the Spaniard. He lost in a playoff at Carnoustie back at the 2007 Open Championship. He has been having a rough 2018 season, with four missed cuts, but he has finished 12th or better in his last two events in Europe to build some momentum for this week. He also has finished in the top 6 of this event three of the last four years and has 10 top-10 finishes at The Open Championship in his last 17 appearances.
Ian Poulter $7,800: Poulter has been having a pretty strong last 12 months and seen some of his best major performances in a while. He finished 14th at The Open last year and has been a former runner-up in this major, his best-ever finish. He comes into this weekend having finished in the top 30 in seven straight events, including two top-10 finishes. He also earned his first win this year since 2012. I think Poulter plays well on European soil this week.
Louis Oosthuizen, $7,700: The 2010 Open Championship winner is having a nice 2018 when it comes to majors. He has placed inside the top 20 in both The Masters and U.S. Open. While he has missed the cut in this event the last two years, I think he gets back to playing well this year. He was the 2015 runner-up of this tournament and comes into the weekend having finished 16th or better in his last three tournaments.
Kiradech Aphibarnrat, $7,300: I think Aphibarnrat is a nice dark horse option to consider. While he has missed all four cuts in his Open Championship history, he has looked pretty respectable in the majors this year after not playing in any in 2017. He was 44th at The Masters and 15th at the U.S. Open. Aphibarnrat has two wins on the year, both coming overseas. I think he is someone that can make the cut and possibly sneak his way up the leaderboard.
Tony Finau, $7,200: Finau comes at a surprisingly low price for this event given how well he has played in the 2018 majors. He finished 10th at The Masters and fifth at the U.S. Open. Now he takes part in The Open Championship, which he finished 18th in 2016 and 27th in 2017. Finau has four top-10 finishes this year as well. I like the way he has been playing, especially in the big events. I think he will really out-perform his salary.
