The Open Championship Picks
The 2018 Open Championship is set to get underway starting early on Thursday. Here’s three golfers we like to contend for the title this weekend.
According to the latest oddsmakers, Dustin Johnson is the favorite to win, as he is listed with 12/1 odds. Other short odds to win are Rickie Fowler (14/1), Justin Rose (16/1), and Rory McIlroy (18/1). The Open Championship takes place Thursday-Sunday at Carnoustie Golf Links in Carnoustie, Scotland.
Rory McIlroy 18/1
McIlroy has always been tough in this tournament. He has finished in the top 5 the last three times he has competed, including a win in 2014. He even made his major debut at Carnoustie in 2007, finishing 42nd as an amateur. McIlroy has been a little hit-and-miss this year, with four missed cuts and six top-10 finishes. However, I think this is his event. He is typically at his best at The Open and I expect him to be the man to beat this weekend.
Jon Rahm 22/1
Rahm hasn’t had a great history at this event, or majors in general. However, he finally showed some life at The Masters by finishing fourth. While he missed the cut at the U.S. Open, I don’t think that event was indicative of what can happen this weekend. Rahm has been playing overseas since the U.S. Open and has a pair of top-5 finishes. Overall, he has two wins and seven top-10 finishes out of 14 tournaments this year. I think Rahm makes a strong push to claim his first major this weekend.
Tony Finau 50/1
Finau isn’t getting much love for this event, but he has been one of the best in the majors of 2018. He finished 10th at The Masters despite an ankle injury and was fifth at the U.S. Open. Now Finau comes to The Open Championship, which had been his best major prior to this year. Finau has played in this event twice and was 18th in 2016 and 27th in 2017. I expect better this weekend. Finau can be that longshot winner that will provide a big payout.
