Zach Johnson wins British Open
FIFE, Scotland (TheSpread) – It was a wild finish to The British Open on Monday, but ultimately Zach Johnson emerged as the winner following a three-man playoff.
Jordan Spieth came very close to having a third major in 2015, but came up one shot shy of Johnson, Louis Oosthuizen and Marc Leishman, who all finished at -15 for the tournament. Oosthuizen and Johnson birdied the 18th to get to -15, and in the playoff Johnson bested Oosthuizen by one shot while Leishman struggled, giving Johnson his second major championship.
According to oddsmakers, Johnson came into this week with 80/1 odds to win the Open Championship, which means a wager of $100 on him to prevail will pay out an additional $8,000.
Johnson and Leishman each posted a 66 on Monday’s final round while Oosthuizen shot a 69. Spieth came in with a 69 while Jason Day joined him at -14 after shooting a 70 on Monday. Dustin Johnson, who led after 36 holes, posted back-to-back 75s to finish at -4 for the tournament in a surprising fall. Leishman only made the cut by one shot but shot a 64 on Sunday and then a 66 on Monday to set a 36-hole scoring record at The British Open.
