Matterhorn Belmont Preview
LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – Matterhorn will enter the 2014 Belmont Stakes this Saturday as a massive underdog according to oddsmakers.
While 2014 Triple Crown contender California Chrome is currently listed as a 10/11 favorite, according to oddsmakers from online sports book Bovada.lv Matterhorn is a 40/1 long shot to win the Belmont. That gives him similar odds to Matuszak, who has the longest odds to win at 50/1.
Matterhorn has only raced in one Graded Stakes start, finishing fourth at the Grade II Peter Pan on May 10 behind Tonalist, Commissioner and Irish You Well. He also won a MSW on November 16 of last year, finished 10th in an Allowance on February 22, and third at an Allowance on March 28.
One major negative when it comes to Matterhorn’s odds is the fact that his pedigree, which includes Tapit, is uninspiring. Tapit finished ninth in the 2004 Kentucky Derby, which is the only leg of the Triple Crown that he competed in during his career. While he did win the Wood Memorial in 2004, Tapit also finished sixth in the Grade I Florida Derby and ninth in the Grade II Pennsylvania Derby.
Nothing in Matterhorn’s pedigree suggests that he’ll surprise as a 40/1 long shot this Saturday at the 2014 Belmont Stakes, which starts at 6:30PM ET.
