Overrated, Underrated top 25 teams
LAS VEGAS, LV (The Spread) – College basketball is now on center stage.
With the NFL now in the offseason, the next big sporting event is March Madness. That means sports fans and bettors are going to be tuning into a lot more college basketball games in the next month or so to get ready for the Big Dance. The Spread wants you to be more educated as college basketball season ramps up! Let’s take a closer look at the current top 25. Who is overrated and who is underrated? For this article, I’ll be using the latest USA Today Coaches Poll as a rankings source.
Overrated Teams in the Top 25
Arizona Wildcats (#3) I like the Arizona Wildcats team, but I think they are now a little overrated at number three. Brandon Ashley is out for the season, and that changes this team’s look on the inside in a big way. Aaron Gordon is going to have step up big now. The Wildcats lack of depth in the frontcourt could cause them problems in the coming weeks.
Texas Longhorns (#18) I’m not convinced that this Texas team has what it takes to make a run in the Big Dance. Rick Barnes is not a very good in-game coach, and the Longhorns haven’t played a particularly tough schedule. The Big 12 isn’t a deep conference, and Texas struggles away from home.
Gonzaga Bulldogs (#20) The Gonzaga Bulldogs have had some great teams in the past, but this year’s team isn’t special. Mark Few is a great coach that gets a lot out of his players, but this team doesn’t have the kind of athletes needed to cover big spreads and go deep into March. Look to fade this team when they are big favorites, especially on the road.
Underrated Teams in the Top 25
Virginia Cavaliers (#21) This Virginia team is a dangerous bunch. No one likes playing their style of basketball, but they’ll force you to play it whether you like it or not. Virginia has now gone on the road and picked up some nice wins, and that means a lot to me this time of the year. Virginia is going to be a tough out this season.
Ohio State Buckeyes (#25) Ohio State isn’t a team that can cut down the nets, but they could make a run. The Big Ten is the best basketball conference in the country this year, which means teams like Ohio State will be battle tested going into the Big Dance. Ohio State’s defense is so consistent that it keeps them in every game.
Kansas Wildcats (#9) How is the number nine team underrated? They are underrated because they have a ridiculously high ceiling. Kansas doesn’t have it all put together quite yet, but they are getting there. This team has as good of a chance as anyone of getting to the Final Four this year. Embiid is dominating in the paint, and the rest of the freshmen are starting to gel as a team. Watch out for the Jayhawks!
