Week 1 of the NFL season is soon approaching and we will begin to see more line movement across the board as it gets closer to kickoff. I would like to discuss a few games where I have seen early line movement and I’ll let you know whether you should place your wager now or wait accordingly.
Example 1: The Atlanta Falcons opened up at a -1.5 home favorite vs. the New Orleans Saints. I initially thought this line was ‘off’ and it has not surprised me that it has now flipped to New Orleans -1.5. If you like New Orleans, I’d advise to place your wager now as I am expecting plenty of money to be bet on the Saints in Week 1 and could see this number go to -2.5 or possibly -3.
I have noted that Atlanta will win this game though all along. They have been gearing up for this matchup and head coach Mike Smith needs this game to temporarily get off the hot seat. If you like New Orleans, go ahead and place your wager now. If you like Atlanta like me, let’s wait closer to game time and see if we can get the Falcons +3.
Example 2: San Francisco plays Dallas in Week 1 and they opened a -3.5 road favorite and have since been bet up 2 points to -5.5 . I will note that betting on road favorites in the blind in the NFL is a losing proposition, but the 49ers are capable of covering this game. I highly doubt that this line will go up more and if you like the 49ers, just be patient and wait closer to game time to see where the line settles. And the same goes for Dallas. If you like the Cowboys, I would also wait closer to game time.
Where I think there is money to be made is the over. It opened at 48 and has now gone up to 50-50.5, depending on your local sportsbook. I advise to hop on this game now and bet it OVER, as I am expecting this game to keep rising. We all know the Dallas defense is terrible and is now worse with LB Sean Lee out for the season. The 49ers are without their stud linebacker as well in NaVorro Bowman, who is out with a knee injury. These are key injuries and with both teams having star wide receivers, I am expecting a shoot-out with a final score in the 34-27 range. Let’s go ahead and Play the OVER here.
