LAS VEGAS, NV (The Spread) – The 2014 Masters tees off on Thursday. Here are some of the golfer you should consider betting on.
I have played golf for a significant portion of my life and have played at a very high level, getting to the Final stage of PGA Mid-Amateur Championship. So, I am confident at my abilities to handicap Tournaments, and having won money in 7 of the past 8 Majors speaks to the fact.
Looking at Bovada odds, it is not surprising to see last year’s winner, Adam Scott, listed as a co-favorite with Rory McIlroy at 9/1. There have been just three back-to-back winners and perhaps Scott could avenge the demise of Greg Norman’s epic loss. Phil Mickelson will always get public backing and his type of erratic game can work very well at the Masters, where the short game and recovery are rewarded. Jason Day always seems to be in the hunt on the weekend. Matt Kuchar is fast becoming the most popular player not named Mickelson and is a bit over valued at 20/1.
I really like Rory McIlroy in this Masters. He has not won on the PGA or European Tours since 2012, but his mind, body, and game are all on full throttle. With a win, he would be three quarters of the way to the career grand slam at the age of 24. In his last official nine events he has SEVEN Top-10 finishes that also includes a playoff loss in the Honda Classic. So, at 9/1, I think he is a great wager to win.
Phil Mickelson is my next choice and has to be hedged a bit given his withdraw from the Valero Texas Open with an oblique strain. He is 43-years old, but still bombs the ball with the top PGA players. Since 2000, every winner has ended the PGA season ranked 68th or higher in driving distance, and of these winners, many have ranked in the top-30 in driving distance. The reason is quite simple. At August where 80-degree weather will bake the hard greens this week, the players that can hit very high shots from 200+ yards will be rewarded. For those, who don’t play golf, the greens at August can be like billiard tables and it is necessary to hit very high shots that can stay on the greens. Mickelson has the complete Augusta game.
Jason Day is another elite player from down under and is ranked fourth in the World rankings. He has the length and nerves to compete and win, but most of all he has the experience of being on the Leader Board on Sunday afternoon. The slogan is so true that the Masters starts on the back nine Sunday and this just might be the year that Day wins.
