Three Kentucky Derby Sleeper Picks

Looking for a sleeper or two to finish inside the money at this year’s Kentucky Derby? Here are three picks ahead of tonight’s race at Churchill Downs.

According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, Nyquist is the current favorite to win at 3/1, while Exaggerator has the next-best odds at 8/1 and Creator, Gun Runner and Mohaymen are 10/1, respectively.

Bet Today’s Kentucky Derby

Those are the contenders with the best odds: What about a few darkhorses that could cash this evening at Churchill Downs? Here are three sleeper picks to consider.

Destin 15/1

He’s coming off eight weeks of rest so he’s going to give his best shot this evening. Destin has a very impressive pedigree, as he’s by three-time leading sire Giant’s Causeway out of Grade 1 winner Dream of Summer, which makes him a full-brother to Grade 1 winner Creative Cause, who finished third in the 2012 Preakness and fifth in that year’s Kentucky Derby. A natural stalker, Destin has three wins in five career starts with one second-place finish.

Mor Spirit 12/1

From Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert, Mor Spirit has three wins in seven career starts and has placed second four times. Thus, he’s never finished worse than second in his career and he’s a Grade 1 winner that has run well at Churchill Downs. After three straight elite performances in graded stakes, he finished second in the Santa Anita Derby on a sloppy track so he should run well today.

Danzing Candy 15/1

Coming from all the way outside at the No. 20 post position, Danzing Candy has won three times in five career starts and took down Mor Spirit by two lengths in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes on March 12 in his stakes debut. He did have a dud performance in the Santa Anita Derby but that was his first race on a sloppy track. He should rebound.
