Texans vs. 49ers Preseason Pick
Will the Texans cover as an underdog tonight when they kick off their preseason schedule against the 49ers at 7:00PM ET?
According to oddsmakers from online sports book BetDSI, the 49ers are 3-point home favorites versus the Texans while the over/under currently sits at 37 points. While the side hasn’t moved off the opening number, the over/under opened at 34.5 before jumping a full 2.5 points up to 37.
J.J. Watt (back surgery) and Jadeveon Clowbey (knee) will both miss the Texans’ preseason opener tonight. Clowney has been sidelined with some “minor soreness” in his knee and the Texans want to play it conservative with the former first overall pick, while Watt wants to play Week 1 but will miss the entire preseason.
The big news in 49ers camp is which quarterback Chip Kelly will choose as his starter. Bay Area News Group’s Cam Inman believes that team’s quarterback competition has already ended, however, and that Blaine Gabbert is locked-in as the starter. Colin Kaepernick is dealing with an injury or soreness in his throwing shoulder and appears to be well behind Gabbert.
OUR PICK: Look for Brock Osweiler to be focused after many criticized the Texans for signing the former Bronco to a massive contract this offseason. And once he exits the game, veterans Tom Savage and Brandon Weeden will take over and should keep the offense moving versus San Francisco’s backups. Since Kaepernick hasn’t practiced the last few days, it’s doubtful he’ll play tonight versus Houston. That means once Gabbert leaves the game, Thad Lewis and rookie Jeff Driskel will take over. We’ll take Savage and Weeden over Lewis and Driskel when this game turns to the backups tonight.
