Lani and Shagaf both have -120 odds, respectively, to finish ahead of each other in this specific matchup prop. Neither horse has to win the race or even finish in the money for bettors to win this wager, the contender just has to beat the other one.
Lani, who drew the No. 8 post position on Wednesday, has three wins and one second-place showing in six starts to earn $1,366,618 for owner Yoko Maeda. Trained by Mikio Matsunaga, Lani will be ridden by jockey Yutaka Take today at Churchill Downs and is a natural press/pacesetter.
Shagaf, meanwhile, drew the No. 16 post position on Wednesday and will be ridden by Joel Rosario in tonight’s Kentucky Derby. In four career starts Shagaf has three wins and has earned $328,800 for owner Shadwell Stable. Trained by Chad Brown, Shagaf is a stalker in terms of running style.

But don’t let that performance deter you. Prior to that start, Shagaf was unbeaten in three starts and the 110 Equibase Speed Figure placed him wit the best of his generation. As for Lani, the best performance by a UAE Derby winner in the Kentucky Derby was a fifth-place finish by Master of Hounds in 2011. We don’t see Lani being an UAE outlier this evening at Churchill Downs.
