Will Peavy trade boost Giants?
SAN FRANCISCO, CA (The Spread) – Will the trade for Jake Peavy have a positive impact on the Giants’ odds this season? Let’s take a closer look.
Peavy is 1-10 on the year with a 4.71 ERA in 21 starts. Nine of those losses were with Boston as he’s sits at 0-1 as a Giant. Peavy’s first start for the Giants was versus the Dodgers in San Francisco which I think we can all agree that’s a tough first game with so many adjustments being made on the fly. The trade reunites Peavy with manger Bruce Bochy who managed the starter in San Diego. This familiarity bodes well for Peavy to have a smooth transition as a Giant. You could make the argument that Peavy’s record is misleading as a lack of run support in Boston played a role.
Peavy may not be quite the pitcher he was at one time, but I definitely expect better results from him as a Giant. San Francisco is currently leading the wild card race in the National League and pitching for a contender will give Peavy a much-needed boost. It’s also no secret that pitchers coming from the American League to the National League usually improve for the simple fact they no longer face a designated hitter as often. Peavy is a tough competitor and becoming a Giant will give him a fresh reason to go out and prove himself to the Giants and their fans.
Peavy’s next scheduled start is Saturday versus the Mets in New York. This is where I expect Peavy to pick up his first win as a Giant. The Giants are currently 3-0 on the season versus the Mets and I see no reason why they won’t pick up another win with Peavy on the mound. When you take a closer look at Peavy’s stats you will find he sits at 1-0 versus the Mets with a 1.35 ERA at Citi Field in recent history.
Young gun Jacob deGrom is scheduled to start for the Mets and has won his last four starts, but he’s due for a clunker. I don’t expect the Mets to give deGrom a whole lot of run support. As the rest of the season progresses don’t let Peavy’s win-loss record automatically turn you off as you should consider backing Peavy if the right play presents itself.
