There are a few simple things to consider when looking at totals in MLB. The first item you want to consider is what teams’ bats are hot, and which ones are cold for the past week or so. This plays a factor in a couple different ways. The odds makers may be setting a trap line, or there may be a line error that you can take advantage of. For example, if a team has been putting up big run production, and all of a sudden a total is set low, you would take a closer look at hitting the under in that game, while on the flip side if a team has been running low in run production, and the total is set high, you would take a closer look at hitting the over in that one.
The next item up is to consider the starting pitchers in the games. This plays a factor in a similar way that recent run production does. You may have a couple of pitchers that have been lights out on the season, but the total is set high, you would want to take a closer look at hitting the over. The opposite can be said for a couple of pitchers who have been getting lit up, with a total that is set low, consider hitting the under. You also want to consider a pitcher’s recent results Vs the upcoming team, as they may be having a shaky season, but bring their “A” game for that given team.
Rest and travel also play a part into the decision, as this can factor into a team’s motivation for that game. Teams coming off an extra innings game on no rest, may not put up the run production on par for their season, while teams that are rested and at home may put up bigger offense then their season average.
It’s also smart to see where the public money is hitting, and how the line has been adjusted. For example, if the majority of bets are coming in on the over, yet the total has dropped, you would take a closer look at hitting the under, and vice versa.
You should also be selective in choosing which totals to hit. There’s no reason to force a play, be patient, and wait on the right total to pounce on.
